After falling on the road once again, this time to in-state foe Kansas State, Kansas basketball’s streak of consecutive Big 12 titles is in jeopardy.

For most programs, going 6-4 in a tough conference like the Big 12 would be an accomplishment. For the Kansas Jayhawks, however, it’s anything but.

You see, KU has an impressive streak going of consecutive Big 12 titles, which is up to 14 straight and dates back to the 2004-2005 season. In other words, this is a big time accomplishment for any program, but for Kansas fans, keeping that streak alive is critical.

It doesn’t look promising for the Jayhawks to win their 15th straight title, as this team is horrendous on the road, away from Allen Fieldhouse. They’ve won just one game outside of Lawrence, which was against Baylor near the beginning of conference play.

Since then, six losses away from the confines of Allen Fieldhouse, including Tuesday night’s loss to Kansas State. Beating Kansas State, a team that the Jayhawks have typically handled, would have been a massive step in securing that 15th straight title, but instead, KU turned the ball over 20 times and handed K-State an easy victory.

When looking at the rest of KU’s schedule, it’s not horrifying, as the Jayhawks have just one ranked opponent remaining. They do, however, have four road games left and that’s what should worry Kansas fans.

Those road games are against TCU, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, and Oklahoma. Texas Tech is the only ranked team remaining and after seeing how badly KU slaughtered them in Lawrence, the Red Raiders will certainly be out for revenge. That’s likely another loss.

Oklahoma State is atrocious, so KU should rack up a rare road win in Stillwater. Winning in Norman and in Fort Worth could be difficult, but Kansas took care of business against both at Allen Fieldhouse, so hopefully that translates to their games away from home.

Right now, Kansas State sits atop the Big 12 standings, losing just two games in conference play. They’re 7-2 and alone at the top with Baylor and Iowa State in the second and third spots respectively.

The Jayhawks are tied for fourth in the Big 12 with Texas Tech, a team they still have to play on the road. I mentioned that game will likely result in an L for Kansas, but if they somehow can go into Lubbock and knock off the Red Raiders, that’d be huge.

Every year fans panic at the chances of the streak ending and deep down aren’t all that concerned. This year, however, it really does seem like the consecutive Big 12 title streak could be coming to an end.
