Kansas City Chiefs: The ugly situation with Eric Berry
Enter his 2016 season, the final year of his rookie contract.
Berry was looking to ink a new deal and sat out a majority of training camp that August. He and the Chiefs got into ugly negotiations that ultimately led to nothing. Berry went on to have the best season of his career, earning another All-Pro selection and almost single handily winning the Chiefs two games against Atlanta and Carolina.
This brings us back full circle to that ridiculous contract he signed in 2017.
Berry handcuffed the Chiefs and then-general manager John Dorsey to yet again make him the highest paid safety in the league. Chiefs fans couldn’t bare to watch their legendary player hit the open market and play in another uniform! Dorsey had to get that deal done!
Since then, Berry has played in a total four games, three of which weren’t even a four full quarters. Berry suffered an unfortunate Achilles injury in his first game after signing that huge deal.
