THERE’S A NEW SHERIFF IN TOWN

For decades, Chiefs fans have lamented the lack of a franchise quarterback in a Chiefs uniform.

Outside of Len Dawson, the Chiefs really can’t stake much of a claim on having a historically great franchise quarterback. Having Joe Montana for a couple of years was exciting, but his final years in the league didn’t give Kansas City much to really build on.

Before drafting Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City really couldn’t lay claim to ever drafting a real notable quarterback. They did draft Roger Staubach in 1964, but his Hall of Fame career was played with the Dallas Cowboys. Until the Chiefs drafted Patrick Mahomes, they hadn’t had a drafted quarterback win a regular season game in three decades.

Not only did Mahomes break that cycle against Denver in 2017, but he has since tallied 13 more total victories in his first year as a starter.

While Chiefs Kingdom can’t crown Mahomes the greatest ever after only a season, we can rest easy knowing that the franchise quarterback has finally been found. In becoming only the second player ever in NFL history to throw for 50 touchdowns and 5,000 yards in a season, there really isn’t a more explosive way to start a promising career.

Mahomes looks to be the top quarterback in the league again in 2019, even if he does come back down to earth to some degree. From breaking touchdown records to becoming a Pro Bowl MVP, Mahomes put the rest of the league on notice in 2018. The franchise, as well as the future, is looking incredibly bright in Kansas City for a lot of years to come.
