KC Chiefs: Notable accomplishments from the 2018 season
By Chris Clark
ONE WIN AWAY
Before the 2018 playoffs, the Chiefs had only played in three conference championships in the Super Bowl era. None of those three games were played in Kansas City. For the first time ever, the road to the 2018 Super Bowl ran through Arrowhead Stadium.
Unfortunately, the first-ever AFC Championship game played at Arrowhead didn’t turn out the way Chiefs fans had hoped. The Patriots came in with years of deep playoff experience and controlled their own destiny for far too much of the game. It’s often said that they are no moral victories in a loss, but if there were, this would be one.
For first-year starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes, going toe to toe with Tom Brady in the postseason is a big deal. The Chiefs were down early but didn’t quit and it even took overtime for the Patriots to get the win. Had Mahomes and Chiefs got the ball first in overtime, it may have been a very different outcome.
While the outcome was disappointing, fans should still be excited that that was the first conference championship to have ever been played at Arrowhead Stadium.
What’s even more exciting is that this Chiefs team has the capability to bring the game to Arrowhead again and actually win it. Chiefs Kingdom should just consider this the first of many AFC Championship games at Arrowhead in the years to come.
