The KC Chiefs 2018 season came to a close a just few Sundays ago. While it didn’t end with a Super Bowl victory, this shouldn’t overshadow the successes that came in a highly memorable season.

Chiefs Kingdom should celebrate five significant accomplishments from 2018. The Kansas City Chiefs have been building something special since head coach Andy Reid arrived in 2013.

While it may feel like a long six seasons without a Super Bowl win, that goal suddenly seems to be within reach. The Reid era has made winning the norm and it is also changing the way football looks in Kansas City.

Even finishing just short of the goal to win the Super Bowl, some incredible things still happened in 2018 for the Chiefs. The accomplishments of this last season altered the course of the team’s history. So, let’s look at what those accomplishments were.

SLAYING A GIANT

Simply beating the Pittsburgh Steelers doesn’t seem like a really tall task or great accomplishment, but if you’re the Kansas City Chiefs, it is.

The Chiefs have compiled a lot of wins in the Andy Reid era, but getting past a Ben Roethlisberger-led Steelers team has just seemed like too big of a mountain to climb. From regular season losses to a divisional playoff loss a couple of seasons ago, Pittsburgh has just had Kansas City’s number.

That all changed in 2018, though. Before the season began, no one would have expected the Chiefs to start the season 2-0 on the road against teams like the Los Angeles Chargers and the Steelers. After dropping 38 points on the Chargers in L.A., the Chiefs crossed the country to drop 42 points on the Steelers in week two.

The last time the Chiefs had beaten the Steelers with Big Ben at quarterback was in 2009 and he didn’t play in the entire game. So, the 42-37 victory over the future hall of fame quarterback and his team in their house was a big deal. Thanks to a six-touchdown outing by Kansas City’s new franchise quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, it looks like the tables have finally turned with AFC powers.

Chiefs Kingdom shouldn’t look at one victory over the Steelers like it’s the Super Bowl, but it did slay one giant that has stood in the way for several years in becoming an elite team. Instead of Kansas City looking to get past Pittsburgh, it now looks like Pittsburgh will have to get past Kansas City. Though it’s just one victory, this was a big accomplishment for the Red and Gold.
