Josh Oliver, Tight End (San Jose State)

San Jose State is not a school known for pumping out NFL products, but Josh Oliver is an interesting case to watch. Big and athletic, the small school product caught 56 passes for 709 yards and four touchdowns during his senior season.

Oliver has good size at 6’5″ and 250 pounds and he displays quality athleticism and receiving skills across the board. Long arms and quality understanding of route running, Oliver is able to work the middle of the field as a true receiving threat.

light. More. Tight Ends Need to be Point of Emphasis

His blocking needs work, more of an interference, in the way approach than physically moving people out of the way. Pass routes, emphasis on the details need work as well, as Oliver will no longer be able to simply be bigger and more athletic than some the defenders trying to slow him down. That was often the case at San Jose State.

The Chiefs are going to find at least one ‘receiving’ threat in the draft, and likely in the first couple rounds. They are also likely to find, if they haven’t done it earlier, depth at tight end.

Currently, starter Travis Kelce is the only tight end on the roster with a catch during an actual NFL game. Oliver is a nice, developmental tight end that could be a nice backup/second tight end option for the Chiefs offense.
