Te’von Coney, Linebacker (Notre Dame)

The Notre Dame linebacker has been a tackling machine for the Irish as a middle backer for a team that reached the college football playoffs this season, including getting in on 16 total tackles and half a sack against Clemson. In the past two seasons alone, Te’von Coney has recorded 240 tackles.

Perhaps not ideally shaped at 6’1″ and 240 pounds, Coney could be a nice value middle linebacker in the Chiefs new defense. In the mold of the classic, downhill middle backer, Coney is a sure tackler that could man the middle of the field.

Asking him to do much pass coverage, especially man coverage, is certainly not asking him to play to his strengths. That could limit his potential and likely reduce the Irish product to a more two down style linebacker.

Middle linebacker will be an interesting position to watch this offseason.

Current middle linebacker Reggie Ragland was traded by Buffalo after the Bills switched from a 3-4 to a 4-3 defense. Do the Chiefs view and have the same concerns about the current incumbent?
