MOST SURPRISING CHIEFS IN 2018 – NUMBER 2: DAMIEN WILLIAMS

Signing Damien Williams was a gamble due to his previous experience being spent as a backup for four years in Miami. It was also a bit of a risk due to his recent shoulder injury.

He began the season as a third-stringer, but after the Chiefs released Kareem Hunt and after Spencer Ware got injured, Williams was thrust into the starting running back role. He rushed for 256 yards and four touchdowns.

Williams finished the season averaging 5.1 yards per carry, along with 23 receptions and six touchdowns. His recent outburst of production will also help move the running back position lower down the list of immediate offseason needs for Kansas City.

It seems that the Chiefs see his value as well, as Williams just signed a two-year contract extension with Kansas City. No one would have expected Damien Williams to be a contributor at the beginning of the year, but he stepped into a tough situation and proved he could be the answer moving forward.
