DRAFT SOME OFFENSE

There is a lot of talk about the Chiefs will again do nothing, but draft all defense again to help fortify an ailing defense. This is a strategy that is both stupid and was tried before by this very organization and failed in dramatic fashion.

The offense is on the verge of getting old really quick, so the idea of drafting only defense is an idea that needs to go out the window. The Chiefs should use at least two of their first four picks on offense. Below is a list of tight ends on the Chiefs roster (who are FOR SURE returning in 2019) that have caught a pass in the NFL.

That’s it. No one else makes that list. Kelce has played A LOT of football, and is not cheap. Yes, tight end is a position I expect the Chiefs to address, and early, in the 2019 draft. The draft appears to be really deep at the tight end position and the Chiefs need to plan for the day Kelce needs to be moved on from.

How about at running back? The Chiefs have Damien Williams and Darryl Williams and that’s it. Spencer Ware and Anthony Sherman are both free agents and it’s hard to imagine how either are brought back.

Ware’s usage as a short yardage/special teams player is replaced by Darryl and Sherman was used more on special teams than in the offense, and with the salary crunch, players such as Sherman often find work elsewhere.

Damien Williams did a decent job filling in for Kareem Hunt after the back’s release, however, he’s not the answer for a full season as the feature guy. Do the Chiefs draft a running back in the 2019 NFL Draft? Almost certainly. Will they do it in the top three rounds? Maybe.

Here’s a secret. If you are able to run the ball, you control the clock, controlling the clock helps the defense.

The Chiefs have the ability to score quickly, they need to be able to grind out the clock at the end of a game. Like say, against the Chargers. Not having Hunt on that Thursday night game went a long way in the Chargers upset win over the Chiefs as their inability to grind the clock gave the Chargers extra chances.
