TYREEK HILL AND CHRIS JONES

Both players are dominant players for the Chiefs and consistently make plays. Hill with long passes and Jones set the NFL record for consecutive games with a sack. Both players are also going into the final year of their rookie contracts. If the Chiefs are going to extend the players, this offseason would be the ideal time to extend the two impact, dynamic players.

The problem becomes price.

Joel Corry indicated both players were in line for massive pay raises. The Sammy Watkins contract (16 million per season)  is the floor for the Hill extension. Keeping Hill could require the Chiefs to top the Odell Beckham contract, which saw the Giants wide receiver get 18 million per season, with 65 million in guarantees.

Jones, on the other hand, likely gets a deal that is close, but doesn’t quite eclipse all world defender Aaron Donald of the Rams. A deal between what Donald received and the contract Fletcher Cox signed with the Eagles in 2016 is more likely for Jones. A six-year deal worth more than 102 million is probably required to secure the services of the defensive lineman long-term.

Can the Chiefs get both extensions done this offseason? Even one of them at a lower number is a good idea. Both are young impact players that would be difficult to borderline impossible to replace. At some point you have to pay the freight on these guys, so can you get one of them done now?
