ROUND 6 – PICK 28 (203RD OVERALL)

As I just mentioned on the previous slide, the Chiefs need help in the secondary. They use their sixth pick of the draft and add their fourth member of the secondary. The pick is Justin Layne out of Michigan State.

A once wide receiver turned cornerback, Layne spent three years with the Spartans and is forgoing his senior year to enter the draft. He had 130 tackles, 24 defended passes, and three interceptions during his Michigan State career.

The Chiefs spent an earlier pick on a cornerback, but it’s a position that definitely needs to be addressed this offseason. Kendall Fuller is talented, but we’re unsure of what’s going to happen to guys like Steven Nelson and Charvarius Ward.

Justin Layne might not be an immediate playmaker in the Chiefs secondary, but depth is key in these later rounds. His experience as a wide receiver at Michigan State shows that he has the desired speed to cover guys.
