ROUND 1 – PICK 29 (29TH OVERALL)

For those of you who watched the Chiefs frequently this season, you’ll notice that their secondary was lousy. They need to spend several picks in the 2019 NFL Draft on upgrading that lousy secondary.

For their first round pick in my way too early mock draft, I had the Kansas City Chiefs selecting Alabama safety Deionte Thompson.

Thompson was actually linked to the Chiefs in Mel Kiper’s latest mock draft, so it appears that it’s already looking like a good match by draft analysts. I mainly went this route because the Chiefs need safety help, and desperately.

Eric Berry, as much as we love him, played in what, two games last year? He’s a great talent and means a lot to the organization, but the Chiefs can’t continue to depend on him with his injuries over the last two years.

Eric Murray isn’t very good. Daniel Sorensen makes some good plays here and there, but isn’t great in coverage. Jordan Lucas showed potential, but he can’t do it all. Armani Watts was injured for most of his rookie season, so we’re not entirely sure what he can do honestly.

Bringing in Deionte Thompson and pairing him with a (hopefully) healthy Eric Berry would be ideal here, but if not, Lucas and Sorensen could get the job done. Thompson would provide immediate relief to the safety corps and honestly, as long as this first round pick is spent on a defensive player, I don’t think Chiefs fans would have much to complain about.
