Kansas City Chiefs: Rookie grades for 2018 draft class
By Chris Clark
The Chiefs really could have used Armani Watts’ services after injuries to both Eric Berry and Daniel Sorensen. Unfortunately for Watts, the injury bug bit him as well in his first year as a pro. The 5’11”, 205 pound safety has the potential to be an impact player.
Picked in the fourth round, Watts could have been the steal of the draft had he not been injured. With such a small sample size, it’s hard to know what grade he really deserves. For that reason, he gets an incomplete grade here.
The Chiefs seem to have found a talented contributor in Tremon Smith. The sixth-round pick made the PFWA All-Rookie Team in his first year as a kick returner and racked up 180 return yards in one game alone. Smith was even trusted enough during the playoff stretch to earn a start at defensive back against the Seattle Seahawks.
With 4.3 second 40-yard speed, Smith did well in taking over the kick returner roll from Tyreek Hill. His value here in alleviating Hill from doing both punt returns and kickoff returns is big. While Smith only came close to taking a kickoff return to the house once, he’s sure to do in the years to come.
