KC Chiefs: Good, Bad, Ugly vs Patriots in AFC Championship Game
UGLY: DEE FORD PENALTY
Before I dive into this entry, I want to say that I’m not putting the loss on Dee Ford at all. The Chiefs had several other opportunities to win the game and they couldn’t.
Their offense could have done more in the first half. The run defense could have showed up. The defense could have made a stop at some point or the pass rush could have made a play.
Instead… We’ll all be blaming this loss on Dee Ford. So, let’s look at what happened.
There wasn’t much time left in regulation and the Patriots were driving to take the lead. On third and ten at the KC 34-yard line, Tom Brady threw a pass that was picked off by Charvarius Ward. Had that play stood, the Chiefs would have won the game. Obviously it didn’t though because this is the Kansas City Chiefs we’re talking about. They don’t get nice things.
What happened was Dee Ford was offsides, negating the interception and giving the Patriots offense another shot to win the game. They’d go down and score a touchdown not long after because of course they would.
While Ford’s offsides penalty was soul crushing, it’s not the only reason the Chiefs lost the game. As I mentioned above, the offense could have done more early on and the pass rush didn’t get to Brady once. It might seem like it’s one play that decides a game, but there are so many other plays to take into account when it’s all said and done.
