COLDEST GAMES IN CHIEFS HISTORY – NUMBER 6

DECEMBER 14, 1963 VS PATRIOTS (9.2°)

Back in 1963, the Patriots were actually the Boston Patriots and the Kansas City Chiefs were early into their existence. Both teams were a part of the American Football League (AFL), which hadn’t merged with the NFL yet at that point.

Late in the 1963 season, the Chiefs hosted the Patriots on a bone chillingly cold day. It was nine degrees with a windchill of minus six on that December 14th day where the Chiefs DESTROYED the Patriots by a score of 35-3.

Len Dawson threw for three touchdowns and one interception while Patriots quarterback Babe Parilli completed just seven passes for 64 yards and threw five picks. The Chiefs defense was swarming Parilli all day, which was indicated by those interceptions. Dave Grayson had two picks while Bobby Bell, Johnny Robinson, and Duane Wood had the other three.

It’d be pretty darn neat if this game could be what plays out on Sunday for the AFC Championship Game, but I wouldn’t bet on that happening.
