COLDEST GAMES IN CHIEFS HISTORY – NUMBER 8

DECEMBER 21, 2008 VS DOLPHINS (10°)

In one of the worst seasons in Chiefs history, one of the coldest games ever took place at Arrowhead Stadium late in the year. By week 16 of the 2008 season, Chiefs fans were ready for the regular season to be over with, but for the 73,689 who attended, this game was a cold one.

It was ten degrees around kickoff with a -12 windchill whipping around the stadium. The chilly weather didn’t slow down the Chiefs or the Dolphins on offense, but defense appeared to be optional on that cold December day.

You’d think that a cold day would have been tough for the Dolphins to overcome considering they play half their games in sunny Florida, but nope. The Fins came to Arrowhead and left with a victory.

Miami got off to a 10-0 lead, but good ol’ Tyler Thigpen connected with Devard Darling on a 33-yard touchdown pass to get the Chiefs on the board. KC would then take the lead early in the second quarter when Thigpen found an open Tony Gonzalez for an eight-yard score.

The teams traded the lead a few times before KC stopped scoring after putting up 31 points. Ricky Williams rushed for a score in the fourth quarter and the Dolphins took the lead on a Chad Pennington pass to Anthony Fasano. Miami would end up winning it 38-31.

Thigpen threw for 320 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions while Pennington threw for 235, three touchdowns, and a pick. Larry Johnson rushed for 108 yards and a touchdown while rookie Jamaal Charles hauled in three receptions for 102 yards.

The 2008 Chiefs team was able to put up points, the defense just couldn’t stop anyone. Even with their offensive putting up 31 points, it wasn’t enough to win the eighth coldest game in Chiefs history.
