Kansas City Chiefs: Coldest games in Chiefs history
COLDEST GAMES IN CHIEFS HISTORY – NUMBER 9
JANUARY 7, 1996 VS COLTS (11°)
One of the coldest games in Chiefs history was also one of the worst games in franchise history. This game is known to many as the “Lin Elliott Game”. That’s because Elliott missed three field goals that day and the Chiefs would go on to lose to the Colts in the AFC Divisional Round by a score of 10-7.
It was cold on that January 7th game with temperatures sitting around 11 degrees and the wind chill around -15. The rough weather led to a low-scoring affair at Arrowhead Stadium with only 17 total points being scored that afternoon.
The Chiefs struck first with a first quarter touchdown, as Steve Bono hit Lake Dawson with a 20-yard touchdown pass to put KC up 7-0. It was all Colts after that sadly, as Jim Harbaugh tied things up with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Floyd Turner.
Colts kicker Cary Blanchard made one kick on the day (a 30-yarder) and that was all that needed to happen for Indy to win. They left Arrowhead with the 10-7 victory and advanced to the AFC Championship Game that year.
As mentioned earlier, Elliott missed all three of his field goal attempts. Hopefully with the recent victory over the Colts in this year’s AFC Divisional Round, people can let the stuff with Elliott go.
Even with those missed kicks, however, this game still stands as the ninth coldest game in Kansas City Chiefs history.
