Kansas City Chiefs: Blace Brown could draw attention in 2019 NFL Draft
By John McCarty
The Kansas City Chiefs will be looking to add a corner in the upcoming 2019 NFL Draft. Troy defensive back Blace Brown is the tall, athletic corner the Chiefs could use on their defense in the future.
We continue our look at potential Kansas City Chiefs 2019 NFL Draft picks with Sun Belt Conference product Blace Brown of Troy University. A roster that sees only veteran Kendall Fuller along with rookies Tremon Smith and Charvarius Ward under contract for next season, it stands to reason the corner position will be addressed early in the 2019 draft, perhaps multiple times before the draft concludes.
With that in mind, a player likely to move up draft boards in the spring is Troy Trojan senior defensive back Blace Brown.
After spending his freshman season on the offensive side of the ball, Brown moved to defense and has become a star. Brown has recorded 12 interceptions, including returning one for a touchdown, two forced fumbles and 111 total tackles. One of the interceptions came in perhaps the program’s biggest win in recent memory, with their defeat of LSU in Baton Rouge.
Brown has the size the Chiefs would want in a corner standing right about 6’0″, and as the receiver and interception totals would indicate, has good hands. Brown is also a willing tackler, and while that’s not his strongest attribute, he’s willing to try and shows a willingness to be physical.
With quick feet and good speed, Brown’s name and stock will likely climb once he leaves Indianapolis and the scouting combine. Confident and comfortable with the back pedal, playing on the line or dropping back into a zone coverage, the senior is versatile.
Brown’s biggest area he needs to work is getting stronger. He looks and, at times, appears to play to his lanky frame, as strength and weight will be a must if he is going to contribute quickly at the next level. From a technique, his transition going from back pedal to running down the field needs improvement.
However, if Brown is able to add the necessary strength, and one would certainly hope time with a NFL weight and nutrition program could add the necessary weight. He certainly can contribute in sub packages and special teams initially and possibly play his way into a starting role by the end of his rookie season.
Do the Kansas City Chiefs consider his name in the second round of the upcoming 2019 NFL Draft? They certainly should.
