KC Chiefs: 2019 NFL Draft prospects to watch in National Championship
By John McCarty
ISAIAH SIMMONS – LINEBACKER/SAFETY (CLEMSON)
Isaiah Simmons is an intriguing name to keep tabs on. The redshirt sophomore is originally from the Kansas City area, having graduated from Olathe North High School in Olathe, Kansas.
Originally a safety prospect, Simmons has put on some weight and moved down to outside linebacker playing the position vacated by current Chiefs rookie Dorian O’Daniel.
While eligible, there has been little indication that Simmons will actually declare. However, if he does, he’s an intriguing name to watch. Standing 6’3″ and 225 pounds, Simmons recorded two sacks, eight tackles for loss and 79 total tackles while also defending six passes and forcing three fumbles.
Still learning the position and growing into his body, Simmons would certainly appear to be more a developmental player than immediate impact, but a player that could early on contribute likely both as a strong safety/nickel linebacker type.
Would the Chiefs draft him? That’s hard to say, as they may view him as a duplicate of O’Daniel or someone they wouldn’t know what to do with. Simmons might stay at Clemson through the 2019 season, but he’s a player the Chiefs certainly should keep an eye on and consider drafting. He’s extremely athletic and has good size.
