KC Chiefs: Comparing Patrick Mahomes to other MVP candidates
WHY DREW BREES DOESN’T DESERVE MVP
If the season ended after Thanksgiving, Drew Brees would have gotten my vote for MVP, but the season still had well over a month to go. After the Saints blew the doors off the Atlanta Falcons on Thanksgiving night, Brees hit a lull and never fully recovered.
When he faced the Cowboys the following week, he threw for just 127 yards, one touchdown, and a pick in the Saints first loss since week one. In the next two games, he totaled 404 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions.
Brees also didn’t play in the season finale, which could have hurt his MVP stock too. I don’t blame the Saints for sitting him since they had nothing to gain in that week 17 game, but Brees had a chance to at least get over 4,000 yards (he only needed eight to get there). With Mahomes having a full 16 games under his belt, that might be enough to put him over the edge.
Brees also plays half of his games in a dome, which helps his numbers for sure. The Saints have a good defense, which is something Mahomes hasn’t had this year, and some might point to that in helping New Orleans get the top seed in the NFC rather than just Brees’ efforts.
I respect the hell out of Drew Brees and what he’s been able to do on a consistent basis throughout his career, so it’s hard for me to say he’s not deserving of MVP, but there are reasons why Mahomes deserves it more than him.
