ROYALS ALL-TIME LEADERS IN RBI: NUMBER 5 – MIKE SWEENEY (837)

ROYALS FIRST BASEMAN AND DESIGNATED HITTER FROM 1995-2007

We now crack the top five in all-time RBIs for the Royals and number five is the great Mike Sweeney. Everyone loved Sweeney when he was a Royal. He spent 13 years with this amazing organization and the numbers show how pivotal he was to a program that mostly struggled during his time here.

The fact that Sweeney embraced being a Royal despite how bad they were is why fans adored him so much. Sween Dog slashed .299/.369/.492 with 837 RBI and 197 home runs in those 13 seasons as a Royal. He also made it to five All-Star games and was normally the lone representative of the Royals.

Sweeney’s best season came in 2000 when he hit .333 with an astounding 144 RBI and 27 home runs. It’s no surprise that Sweeney made it to his first All-Star game that year and that would have happened even if every team didn’t have to have a representative.

It was sad when Sweeney started to decline and the Royals moved on from him. He spent the final three years of his career with three different teams and was out of Major League Baseball after the 2010 season.

To this day, however, he still sits in the top five of all-time RBIs for the Royals and will likely not be passed for a long time. Alex Gordon is the closest and he has one season left in Kansas City. Salvador Perez is the only other current Royal on this list and he has a ways to go before passing the great Mike Sweeney.
