ROYALS ALL-TIME LEADERS IN RBI: NUMBER 9 – JOHN MAYBERRY SR. (552)

ROYALS FIRST BASEMAN FROM 1972-1977

The Kansas City Royals traded for John Mayberry Sr. after the 1971 season wrapped up and fortunately them, it was one of the worst trades the Astros ever made. Mayberry would go on to mash 552 RBIs and 143 home runs during his six years as a Royal.

The first baseman was mostly a power hitter, which explains his mediocre batting averages in most seasons. Mayberry did, however, knock in 100 runs or more in three seasons while a member of the Royals.

Mayberry was a part of those 1970s teams that had the rivalry with the Yankees. Some might argue he wasn’t good for the Royals during those particular games, having arrived late to a game in the 1977 ALCS and then performing poorly after a late night out.

That incident was why Mayberry was soon traded to the Blue Jays, where he played for five years before spending the final few months of his major league career with the Yankees.

Even with a somewhat sour end to his Royals career, John Mayberry still cracks the top ten in RBIs and that’s darn impressive.
