Since that week seven disaster, the Chiefs have improved their total defensive numbers at a steady rate with players like Chris Jones and Dee Ford leading the way.

They now rank 17th, which is right in the middle in points allowed per game (24.0) and they’re tied for first in sacks (31) according to NFL.com stats and info.

Now I understand that some of these stats have come at the feet of some favorable match-ups. For instance, two of these past four games have featured rookie quarterbacks in Baker Mayfield and Josh Rosen, both of which are playing behind two of the worst offensive lines in the league.

That said though, the team has been playing “WIMM defense” as Mitch Holtus calls it on his play-by-play each week as the voice of the Chiefs. It means “When It Matters Most defense”, and I think it’s the perfect way to describe this unit and the direction they’ve been heading all season, particularly the last few weeks.

In an era of football where the rules are tailored to prolific offense and high-flying action, the Kansas City Chiefs have found ways to stay consistent three major categories: Third down defense, scoring defense, and quarterback pressure. When the games have reached pivotal moments, this unit has stepped up all season long.
