Kansas City Chiefs address defense often in early 2019 mock draft
By John McCarty
With their final selection in the 2019 mock draft, the Kansas City Chiefs go with Isaiah Johnson. The Houston standout spent one year at cornerback after switching from wide receiver.
He’s extremely raw for the position, but Johnson has great size, standing at 6’4″. Does he measure that at the Senior Bowl or combine? That remains to be seen, however, when drafting this late, finding a project with athleticism and size is something teams should take a shot at.
The defensive backfield for the Chiefs will be an interesting position group to follow this offseason. Will Daniel Sorensen be back after the emergence of cheaper options in the defense?
What happens with Eric Berry, who has missed now 25 consecutive games and counting? Eric Murray is a free agent at safety along with Steve Nelson and Orlando Scandrick at corner.
Jordan Lucas, Tremon Smith and Charvarius Ward along with, in this situation, Julian Love and Isaiah Johnson provide a core of young defensive backs for years to come.
