The Kansas basketball team will host the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns Friday night in an attempt to start the season 3-0.

The Kansas basketball squad, coming off a rather lackluster win against Vermont on Monday, will try to tune up for the preseason NIT in New York next with a matchup with the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns.

The Kansas Jayhawks were spurred on in each of their previous victories by some torrid three-point shooting. Against Michigan State, Quentin Grimes hit his first six threes, while Lagerald Vick set a Kansas record by going eight-for-eight from behind the arc against Vermont.

Without those sharpshooting efforts, both games might have unfolded a bit differently. The Jayhawks will need a more balanced attack going forward.

Kansas Basketball vs Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns: Things to Watch

Junior Dedric Lawson has gotten off to a slow start offensively. He scored 20 points against Michigan State, but he made only five shots in 18 attempts. Against Vermont, his missed all six of his attempts and was blanked on the scoreboard.

He’s rebounded well so far (14 in game one and seven in game two) and has totaled eight assists, but for the Jayhawks to be as good as they can be, Lawson must be more of a consistent force on offense.

Throw out Grimes’ long-range accuracy in their first game and Vick’s magical second game and the Jayhawks are only shooting only eight for 24 from three-point range. The games by those two players have skewed Kansas’s three-point percentage (52.4) pretty hard. Head coach Bill Self has to be looking for more overall consistency in this area.

Hopefully, Grimes and his fellow freshman Devon Dotson will continue to grow more comfortable each game. They are both averaging just over 30 minutes a game, so Self is giving them every opportunity to find the footing in the college game.

The Kansas basketball team should handle the Ragin’ Cajuns fairly easily, but they need to play a little better overall than they did against Vermont. They need to be ready for Marquette next week in the NIT and hopefully get past them into the finals.
