SALVADOR PEREZ

This is an unlikely one (even though the Royals really should consider it), but we need to throw Salvador Perez on this list. Despite being arguably the most beloved Royal of all-time, Perez isn’t off the trading block.

It’s easy to explain why teams would be interested in Salvy. He’s the best catcher in the American League (and arguably the entire MLB) and still plays top notch defense. His offensive numbers have dropped, yes, but catchers typically don’t rake at the plate.

Another reason teams could want to trade for Perez is that he’s under club control through 2021. He’s 28 years old and will turn 29 in May, but Salvador Perez has proven to be one of the staples for the Royals over the years.

The issue with trading Perez now is that the organization really doesn’t have a decent option at catcher. Cameron Gallagher is the current backup, but he’s not an every day starting catcher. M.J. Melendez is years away from being ready and while Chase Vallot could get a call-up, he’s still not ready to be thrown into that role.

While the Royals might trade Perez before his contract is up, this winter doesn’t seem to be the right time for that. He’s still on this list though because just about everyone is an option… Yes, even Salvy.
