Kansas City Chiefs: Possible trade targets for Chiefs at deadline
By John McCarty
POSSIBLE TRADE TARGETS FOR CHIEFS
MORRIS CLAIBORNE, CORNERBACK (JETS)
It’s hard to process that Morris Claiborne currently is only 28 years old. A free agent after the season, it will be interesting to see what the Jets do with their cornerback. Fitting him on the roster with an extension certainly would appear to be something they could do.
Since he is a free agent after the season, do they move him now and get a pick or two in return? The Jets don’t have a second round selection, as they used that move up in the 2018 draft to acquire Sam Darnold.
Based on Claiborne’s contract, the Chiefs would be responsible for about 1.81 million of the remaining salary. While that’s not as easy to do as the Landon Collins contract, it’s easier to do than what the Chiefs would have to do with Patrick Peterson (we’ll discuss this later).
Pro Football Focus grades Claiborne out with a 74.2 score, good enough to rank 18th in the league. He certainly would be an upgrade over what the Chiefs have currently.
The question (and this is true of anyone a team acquires at the deadline, but especially with the Chiefs and the NFL) is how easily that player can acclimate to the defense affecting on the field production and what does it cost to acquire the player?
I have no idea what it would cost to get Claiborne, perhaps a third round pick? I don’t know. Much would depend on if the Jets are looking to move him or not. If they are, however, the Chiefs might want to consider picking up the phone and calling the Jets about a potential trade for Claiborne.
