Kansas City Chiefs: Good, Bad, Ugly vs Broncos in week 4 of 2018
UGLY: PENALTIES
This was just gross. The Chiefs had ten penalties for 93 yards compared to Denver’s three penalties for 25 yards. Most of the time, that should lose a team the game, but the Chiefs managed to not let that lose it for them.
On the final two drives (both of which KC scored a touchdown on), there were four total penalties on the Chiefs. While obviously things worked out okay, having that many penalties on such crucial drives could have made this an entirely different game.
UGLY: RUN DEFENSE AND SECONDARY
I wish I didn’t have to even discuss the Chiefs defense, but this is the ugly section and it definitely belongs here. Aside from an Eric Murray interception in the third quarter and a shocking three and out in the fourth quarter, this defense did little for the Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes is going to have to carry this team every week.
Yes, the NFL favors offense over defense, but defenses can’t be as useless as the Chiefs’ has been this season. There were wide receivers left wide open, Broncos running backs were having their way against the Chiefs, and Case Keenum was able to complete a fourth and 11 to keep Denver’s drive going.
Some people might have gotten mad at Booger McFarland for continuously ragging on Bob Sutton, but I can’t say I was too upset about it. Booger spoke the truth throughout the broadcast. This defense is baaaad and if it weren’t for a historic start for Mahomes and the offense, this team could be in big trouble.
The run defense surrendered 159 yards to Broncos running backs and the secondary allowed Case Keenum to throw for 245 yards. They did pick him off once, which was refreshing.
The only decent defensive outing tonight was the pass rush, which notched four sacks on Keenum. That’s good to see at least.
