The 1998 season would be the last for Marty Shottenheimer and the Kansas City Chiefs would descend into drama.

Gunther Cunningham would coach the Chiefs for two seasons before being removed. Herm Edwards came next in a string of disappointing seasons. Todd Haley was after him, and the implosion happened and yada, yada, yada. We all know what happened unfortunately.

If that wasn’t enough, we can remember the mini drama that occured when Brian Griese followed Elway and became a free agent. Rumors of interest in the Chiefs briefly popped up only for Griese to re-sign with Denver. That was minor compared to what happened in 2012.

Perhaps the best free agent quarterback ever, Peyton Manning, was making the rounds and it was reported the Chiefs were interested, as pretty much every team in the NFL was at that time.

Where does Manning land? That’s right, with Denver. As the Chiefs would go on to full on implode during the 2012 season that lead to a complete house cleaning at the end of the season, Manning went to Denver and threw over 4600 yards and 37 touchdowns. A year later, he had the Broncos in the Super Bowl (though they got the stuffing beat out of them for what it’s worth).

Manning would retire after the 2015 season, having won his second Super Bowl, riding off into the sunset, somewhat in similar fashion to Elway who won two Super Bowls and then retired.
