Headlines, drama and defeat highlight the start of the Kansas State football season so far. I sat down with John Kurtz, sports director of KMAN radio in Manhattan, to help us better understand what’s going on.

Since graduating from Kansas State in 2009, John Kurtz has been involved with covering Kansas State and currently hosts an afternoon radio show ThegameKMAN during the afternoons. He is also the host of powercatgameday, pregame show for Kansas State football.

1) What happened with the West Virginia game?

The West Virginia game was another game that showed just how far K-State is from being competitive against Power five competition. They forced four turnovers and still only scored six points. I think the defense played fine all things considered but the offense just killed them.

2) The Wildcats have struggled at the start of seasons before. Do you view the 2-2 start to be similar to those starts?

This 2-2 start feels very different than the previous slow starts. K-State has started 3-3 or worse in four of the last five seasons, but they were at least competitive in those losses. Also the schedule looked like it would ease up in the back half of the season some of those years. That isn’t the case this year. I think they’re in big trouble.
