Kansas City Chiefs: Good, Bad, Ugly vs 49ers in week 3 of 2018
UGLY: RUN DEFENSE
The run defense was absolutely gashed by Matt Breida and the 49ers run game. In total, the Niners racked up 178 yards on 29 carries with one touchdown. Breida accounted for 90 of those yards and did so on just ten carries (he averaged nine yards per carry).
Alfred Morris, who I didn’t even realize was still in the league, had 67 yards on 14 carries and the lone rushing touchdown for the Niners. Stopping the run was an area where the Chiefs struggled last year and even after bringing in guys like Anthony Hitchens, Reggie Ragland, and Xavier Williams, the unit doesn’t look any better.
Breida was the leading league rusher heading into this game (not even kidding), so he’s obviously talented, but he shouldn’t be running for 90 yards and averaging nine yards a carry. That can’t happen and this needs to get fixed.
The Chiefs were lucky they had such a big lead at the end of the game because the 49ers were just running the ball down their throat (much like the Titans did in the playoff game last year). While it was a little silly of San Francisco to do that due to being so far behind, they knew they could get yardage and they did just that.
It’s safe to this offseason will solely consist of adding defensive talent because woof… This was bad.
