Mizzou Football: Report Card vs Georgia Bulldogs in week four
Maybe this is too harsh, but I’m rolling with a D- here anyway. Tucker McCann missed a field goal early in the game that would have made it 7-3 in the first quarter. That felt like a huge missed opportunity at the time and lo and behold, it was.
In the second quarter, after going three and out, the Tigers had to punt. Corey Fatony went to punt the ball away and it was blocked by Georgia, who took it back the other way for six. That made it 20-7, which was the score at half time.
While this game was close throughout, that blocked punt had to make Missouri feel like it wasn’t in their cards for them to win the game on Saturday. I will say that the blocked field goal late in the game was big and why I didn’t give this unit an F, but were it not for the missed kick and blocked punt early on, MU might have been able to steal this one.
Missouri couldn’t get out of their own way on Saturday. On Missouri’s first drive of the game (and after picking off Jake Fromm nonetheless), Georgia forced a fumble and took it the other way for six. They went up 7-0 early.
Three drives later, Lock threw a pass that was tipped by the receiver and intercepted by Tae Crowder of Georgia. Crowder returned the ball to within the five of Missouri.
The third turnover was the blocked punt that I mentioned with the special teams grade. Not long after, Drew Lock was sacked and fumbled the football and Georgia had possession of it. That was four turnovers in the first half alone.
Missouri hadn’t played a top tier team yet this year, but these are the mistakes they can’t make if they want to win the game. Take away those turnovers and that’s 17 points taken off the board for Georgia. Missouri lost by 14. Do the math.
