FIVE THINGS TO WATCH VS MICHIGAN

NUMBER 3 – SPECIAL TEAMS NEEDS TO TURN IT AROUND ASAP

The 0-2 start is pretty bad, but Nebraska’s special teams have been the absolute worst part of this team so far. Barret Pickering hasn’t been converting his field goals and missed kicks last week proved to be the difference in the loss to Troy.

Not only was the kicking game less than stellar, but the special teams unit as a whole was blah. Troy was able to return a punt for a touchdown and there were more than enough gross penalties that took place on special teams.

I try not to tie my college football team to my NFL fandom, but being a Kansas City Chiefs fan, it’s uplifting to see how dominant their special teams have been over the last half decade. When the Chiefs special teams unit is at its peak, it can win the Chiefs games. They very rarely make mistakes there and it’s something I’ve been spoiled with.

Nebraska might not ever get to that level this year, but even just an AVERAGE special teams performance would suffice. Pickering did make two field goals, but the missed attempts have already come back to bite the Huskers.

Please no more missed field goals, sloppy penalties, or allowing returns for touchdowns. Get this fixed (or close to fixed) before Michigan.
