Kansas City Chiefs: How Do Chiefs Fair Among AFC Contenders
Los Angeles Chargers
All offseason the focus in the AFC West has been for the Los Angeles Chargers to take the lead in the division finally. Kansas City will absolutely make them work for it after a dominating performance in Week 1. I touched base with Matthew Pagels who we talked to leading up to the Week 1 game to discuss where the Chargers are at as of now.
How did the Chargers look against the Buffalo Bills?
MP: The Chargers did something we don’t often see–they started off hot! The went into the half with a 28-6 and while it was against a Josh-Allen Bills team, it was nice to see the offense clicking and the defense making plays. It’s a bit of a concern to only score three points in the second half, but as long as they don’t let up against better competition, then there shouldn’t be much worry there. On the defensive side of the football, the rookies (Derwin James, Uchenna Nwosu and Kyzir White) are shining. But Allen had some guys open a few times and with a better QB throwing the ball, this game might have been closer, so the Chargers need to still work on that.
Has expectations for this team changed after two games?
MP: It’s still early, but aside from a few mistakes here and then, I like what I see from this team. A lot of talent and the confidence appears to be rising. A win against the Rams in L.A. could really get people paying attention.
How do you feel about the team not only being a contender in the AFC West, but the AFC?
MP: They are definitely contenders. They are going to be competing with the Chiefs for the AFC West crown, but the Chiefs have the edge. Not only do they have the Chargers’ number, but Patrick Mahomes and that offense look unstoppable. I think the Chargers and Chiefs are two of the better teams in what is a weak conference, and both really have the talent to make the playoffs.
Are the Chargers Super Bowl contenders?
MP: Super Bowl is the goal. Do the Chargers have it in them? Kicking, questionable coaching decisions, injuries, and boneheaded mistakes are always in the cards with this team. As I said, I believe the Chargers are right up there with the best in the AFC. But let’s make the playoffs, which they haven’t since 2013, before talking the Super Bowl.
