Kansas City Chiefs: Scouting How Beat The Pittsburgh Steelers In Week 2
Establishing the run game
Kansas City was unable to get a consistent run game established against the Los Angeles Chargers Week 1. They also did not need the running attack as the Chargers had no answer for Tyreek Hill in the passing game. Finding a way to establish the running game against Pittsburgh, however, could be more vital.
The last two times these teams met, head coach Andy Reid went away from the run game. As I mentioned in my article yesterday on my “Five Players To Watch Against The Pittsburgh Steelers,” Spencer Ware and Kareem Hunt as the starting running backs were handed the ball less than ten times per game.
Without even trying to establish the run, the Chiefs offense was extremely predictable allowing the Steelers defense to know they were going to pass. While Patrick Mahomes is the type of quarterback to take advantage of the Steelers weaknesses by stretching the field and making the passes into tight windows, he will need the help of the run game.
The offensive line has looked good in pass protection but has struggled to gain any ground in the rushing attack. The offensive line is full of athletic linemen instead of maulers for Andy Reid’s scheme is to get out into space. They will have to do that considering the talent on the interior line of the Steelers. Reid cannot continue to go away from the run when facing the Steelers this week.
