POTENTIAL HEAD COACH REPLACEMENTS

Craig Candeto (Georgia Tech)

Craig Candeto is a candidate that is a complete reversal from what the Jayhawks are trying to do currently. Candeto comes from the triple option and runs the ball ALL THE TIME Georgia Tech offense. Having played quarterback at Navy under current Tech head coach Paul Johnson, Candeto is likely the expert on all things related to running the ball.

In a league known for it’s passing, this move would be the ultimate ‘going the opposite’ direction of the rest of the conference. One of Kansas State’s secrets to their success is their slow down offense limits the other teams offensive possessions, limiting opposing teams scoring opportunities.

Also, it’s far easier, especially in this current Big12, to find run blocking linemen and running blocks than receivers and throwing quarterbacks when EVERY program within a plane ride from Lawrence is searching for in great detail. If the Jayhawks want to win more games quickly (albeit perhaps with a limited ceiling), this is an approach they need to embrace.

A concern is can a guy like Candeto, who has never coached west of Ohio, recruit well in the area? Also, Kansas has recruited to a scheme the exact opposite of what they are doing. How difficult is it to go from pass blocking along the line to pushing guys off the ball in the run game?

Does KU have the quarterback that can run this offense? The first year or two could be interesting under this decision.
