Kansas City Chiefs: Five Players To Watch Against Chargers
Sammy Watkins
Even with the injuries to the Chargers cornerbacks, the secondary as a whole is one of their strengths. Kansas City made it a point to give Patrick Mahomes as many options at the playmaker positions as possible. Hence the big contract given to Sammy Watkins.
We have yet to see much from Watkins as he only caught one pass this preseason. He’s only played one position since coming into the league, and the Chiefs plan to move him around the offense into every position this season. I’m not too concerned with the lack of production from Watkins this preseason, but I will be taking note at how he looks come the first regular season game.
If Watkins can be that explosive player that we all think he can be, this offense will have a much easier time against the Chargers defense. Even elite defenses will have trouble guarding the Chiefs playmakers like Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce, Sammy Watkins, and Kareem Hunt. That’s not even mentioning third and fourth wide receivers, Chris Conley and Demarcus Robinson.
I’m hoping to see more production out of Watkins as the Chargers try and cover Hill and Kelce primarily. If Watkins can prove to be a threat, we will see a great deal of one on one matchups for all of the Chiefs playmakers. Let’s hope that Watkins can get involved in the offense more Week 1 and at least get a few catches under his belt. Mahomes was determined to get him the ball in the preseason, but how much will that carry over into the regular season with games on the line. Watkins is a sure-handed receiver and could exploit many defenses on the Chiefs schedule this season.
