Kansas City Chiefs: Does Bob Sutton have enough personnel to succeed
The Kansas City Chiefs defense has seen a massive overhaul of players this offseason. Does Bob Sutton have the players to make his scheme successful?
Following another miserable loss in the playoffs last season, the Kansas City Chiefs had some significant changes needing to be made. The organization was quick to respond to all of the fans who wanted defensive coordinator Bob Sutton shipped out of town. Head coach Andy Reid made it clear that they believed that it was a personnel issue, and not a coaching or scheme problem.
Personally, I think it was some of both. There were absolutely areas that you could blame the players from last season. At the same time, there were plenty of times, including during the playoff loss, that Sutton failed to adjust his scheme to his opponent.
Unfortunately, Sutton is here for another season at least whether we agree with it or not. I wanted to look at comparing the first three seasons of defense to what we have seen over the past two years. Taking a look at the personnel that Sutton has had to work with and judge whether or not he had the tools to succeed.
While I’m still not a fan of Sutton remaining in Kansas City this season, I think there is an argument to be made about the personnel. I also believe that he has failed to adjust his scheme to the players that he has to work with, however. Both have been issues so let’s take a look at what had changed since the first three seasons when the Chiefs were top five in points allowed.
