Chiefs keep Matt McGloin over Chase Litton

Another move that will surprise most fans is the fact that Kansas City is keeping Matt McGloin for the third quarterback position over UDFA quarterback Chase Litton. Given how well Litton has looked this preseason, I was hoping that he would make the roster.

McGloin had a great final game against the Packers which could be part of the move. The problem I have with McGloin is that we know what he is already and he’s 28 years old. Head coach Andy Reid usually keeps a young prospect as his third quarterback. Someone that he can mold and develop in the shadows.

Litton fits that bill perfectly. He’s got a strong arm and with the right coaching, could become a solid backup to Patrick Mahomes in the next couple seasons. McGloin has spent time with the Oakland Raiders and Houston Texans as a backup over the years but hasn’t turned out anything special which is why he was fighting with a UDFA to make the roster.

Kansas City hopes to keep Chase Litton on the practice squad this season. Whether or not he will be picked up by another team instead will remain to be seen. It still shocks me that Reid isn’t taking the younger prospect with a higher ceiling over a player that has been in the league for some time now and hasn’t amounted to much. McGloin is also on a one-year deal which makes it worse.
