Kansas City Chiefs: The Ups and Downs of 53-Man Cuts
Cutting UDFA cornerback Arrion Springs and David Amerson
One name that has continued to pop up since offseason workouts is UDFA cornerback Arrion Springs. The former Oregon cornerback has been looked at as a possible starting prospect given a year or two of development. He showcased a good game to end the preseason against the Green Bay Packers but failed to make the final roster.
Kansas City looks to add Springs to their practice squad for the 2018 season. Whether or not they will be able to keep him there will be interesting to watch. I feel that he has shown enough to be targeted by another team as a project.
Given the fact that the Chiefs went out and signed Orlando Scandrick immediately after he was released from Washington, just months after being released from Dallas shows the concern at the cornerback position. He has already shown enough to prove that David Amerson was a mistake and has been cut from the roster.
What’s interesting is that I was saying the Chiefs would cut David Amerson and keep Arrion Springs. It seems that both have been cut and we aren’t sure how many cornerbacks the team is looking to hold on the roster. If the team only keeps five, where is that extra position going?
The only remaining cornerbacks on the roster for the 2019 season as of right now are Kendall Fuller and sixth-round pick Tremon Smith. If Kansas City can keep Springs on the practice squad without losing him to another team, they may have made the right move. If they lose Springs to keep a player like David Amerson, well, it’s a huge mistake.
It was also telling that the Chiefs were still looking for project players at the cornerback position when they traded guard/tackle Parker Ehinger to the Dallas Cowboys for UDFA cornerback Charvarious Ward. One of the biggest needs of the offseason was swept under the rug this offseason. The one free agent that they brought in during the free agency period has been cut.
While it’s not surprising that Will Redmond and Keither Reaser were cut, it’s interesting considering Brett Veach spent the offseason justifying the lack of cornerback additions with those two being underrated.
