Nebraska football should absolutely win this game on Saturday, but the last few years have scared me a bit. I know it’s a new era with Scott Frost, but we haven’t seen this team fully in action yet.

Any time a new head coach comes in, there are going to be growing pains. While Nebraska should win this game, those growing pains will show in this opener and that’s to be expected. With that said, however, they need to learn from those mistakes and put this game away quickly.

In Mike Riley’s first year as the head coach, Nebraska went on to lose in heartbreaking fashion to BYU. Akron isn’t quite the team that BYU was that year, but it’s hard to forget awful losses like that.

All eyes will be on true freshman quarterback Adrian Martinez, as he makes his first collegiate start in Lincoln on Saturday. I can’t wait to see how the kid handles the pressure of being the number one signal caller and hope to see a number of impressive plays from him.

It’ll be fun to watch this new Nebraska team gel and work together. Ever since Frost got hired in December, Cornhusker fans have been eagerly awaiting this weekend. It’s a glimpse of the future and hopefully that future will be as fun for this program as the 1990s were.

Go Big Red!
