FIVE THINGS TO WATCH VS AKRON

NUMBER 2 – ARE THE BLACKSHIRTS BACK?

It’s been disappointing watching the Nebraska defense get shredded over the past few years. Football has evolved a lot more in that offenses do tend to have their way with most defenses, but Nebraska could still stand to improve defensively.

That’s not the case everywhere though, as both Ohio State and Wisconsin (two Big Ten schools) have proven that defense is still important and relied heavily upon. Nebraska HAS to get back to being a dominant defense again if they want to make any type of noise in the Big Ten West.

Scott Frost is definitely a more offensive-minded guy, so it might take some time before we truly see the Blackshirts on the field again. The good news is that Nebraska does have talented defensive prospects ranging from Freedom Akinmoladun to Peyton Newell to Tyrin Ferguson.

The defensive line has some real potential this year and getting after Akron’s quarterback is the best way to make sure the Zips don’t find the end zone. Watching Nebraska get trounced on their own turf by Iowa last year was painful and I, like all other Nebraska fans, want to see some signs of improvement with this defense.

I know it’ll take time, but handling Akron will ease my worries quite a bit.
