Running Backs

Keep: Kareem Hunt, Spencer Ware, Damien Williams, Darrel Williams, Anthony Sherman

Cut: Charcandrick West, Kerwynn Williams

The running back position has not changed from last week. In fact, the Atlanta game only improved my stance on the Chiefs need to keep four running backs and one fullback. Without Damien Williams on the field, UDFA Darrel Williams got time with the second-team offense and looked powerful.

While he only ran the ball six times for 15 yards, he picked up 21 yards through the air on two receptions. One of those receptions being a 17 yard gain coming out of the backfield. He displayed a punishing run style with great stiff arms before finally going out of bounds.

While Kerwynn Williams produced more yards with the third team offense, I’m still not entirely impressed enough to see him making the final cut. Given that Spencer Ware and Damien Williams were not on the field, moving Darrel Williams up to play with the second team was telling to me.

Darrel is a player that I don’t think the Chiefs can afford to let go of. His powerful run style between the tackles and even in the open field after catching passes brings a lot of hope to the Kansas City backfield. If Spencer Ware were to get hurt again this season or find himself as trade bait, I wouldn’t be worried about Damien Williams or Darrel Williams filling that role.
