Cornerbacks

Keep: Kendall Fuller, Steven Nelson, David Amerson, Arrion Springs, Tremon Smith, Orlando Scandrick

Cut: Will Redmond, Keith Reaser, Step Durham, D’Monte Wade

Likely the most concerning area for most Chiefs fans is the cornerback’s position. Kendall Fuller has looked great during his debut preseason games in Kansas City. With a few pass deflections and quick reactions from the slot, quarterbacks have had limited success throwing in his direction.

With the young rookies Tremon Smith and Arrion Springs not quite ready to start, the Chiefs brought in some veteran insurance by signing Orlando Scandrick on Sunday. Given that we have already seen Steven Nelson have to leave a game with a concussion, the writing was on the wall that Kansas City needed another veteran who could step in for a game.

Scandrick might be on the downhill part of his career entering his 10th season, but he has the experience and now motivation to prove himself if he’s called upon. Tremon Smith looked better when he came in with the starting defense following Nelson’s injury, including having a pass deflection in the first half. He struggled last week against Houston, but the game against Atlanta proved that good things are coming.

As the season moves along, I think Smith will have more opportunity over Scandrick. Until the coaching staff feels that he’s ready, it’s nice to have a veteran that can jump in instead of throwing the rookie to the wolves. Arrion Springs has seen time with the cornerbacks and safeties and if he can play well at both, he will be a lock for this roster. The only downfall to Scandrick signing in Kansas City is it likely is what pushes out D”Montre Wade.
