Adding Run Stuffers on defense
The Chiefs’ defensive line has been in a little turmoil over the last few seasons. After losing Dontari Poe to free agency after the 2016 season it seemed that there just wasn’t a big run stuffing body to anchor the defense. The Chiefs signed Bennie Logan for the 2017 season, but that seems to have been a failed experiment with Logan now in Tennessee.
A bright spot that continues to shine in that defensive front, though, is Chris Jones. Compiling 60 tackles in his first two seasons Jones continues to be a good 2016 draft selection for Kansas City. Chiefs Kingdom also has another reason to be excited for an improved defensive line – Xavier Williams.
After not being drafted before the 2015 season Williams signed as a free agent with the Arizona Cardinals. While not producing any big numbers in his time with the Cardinals the Chiefs do see something in the Grandview, Missouri native. His excitement in becoming a Chief should cause fans to be optimistic about Williams helping to improve the defensive line as a whole.
With an improved defensive line, there shouldn’t be as many rushing tackles being made in the secondary. Chiefs fans were frustrated last year watching the tackling, or lack thereof, in the Chiefs secondary on big run plays. Hopefully, that will be different this season with fewer plays going that distance.
