Kansas City Chiefs: The run defense will see a major improvement in 2018
By Chris Clark
The Return of Eric Berry
Eric Berry’s 62 tackles during the 2016 season were a big reason why the Chiefs’ defense finished seventh-ranked overall defense that season. While a portion of those 62 tackles were made defending the passing game opposing teams have to take into account the kind of tackler that Berry is in the run game.
If he’s not roaming the passing lanes looking to make a big hit or nab an interception he’s certainly not afraid to run up and stop an opposing running back from eating up rushing yards. His playing style of somewhat reminiscent of the hard-hitting style of former greats Ronnie Lott and John Lynch.
Berry the highest paid safety in the league and deservedly so. Watching him singlehandedly change the outcome of an entire game is one reason that he is paid so well. Hopefully, he will fulfill his end of that big contract by having a big season coming back from injury.
Berry’s “fear nothing; attack everything” mentality makes his return to the field something for the Kingdom to look forward to this year. His on-field leadership was missed last season, which is one reason to believe that the defense will improve as a whole for 2018, especially helping to stop the run.
