Kansas City Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt

While Kareem Hunt led the league in rushing yards last season during his rookie campaign, he is falling down the running back boards this season. Some of that has to do with his performance during the middle of the season when the offense couldn’t seem to get anything going. It wasn’t as much to do with Hunt as it was playcalling.

There were numerous games during the Chiefs dry period where Hunt saw the football less than ten times per game which is concerning in fantasy football. Yet even with those games getting little opportunities, he still led the league in rushing and either among running backs in receiving.

Hunt enters his second season with the Chiefs in 2018 as a significant role once again. With quarterback Patrick Mahomes taking over the starting position, the Chiefs will need a strong run game to lean on. Mahomes will also be looking for Hunt often in the passing game as well if the offensive line continues to struggle into the regular season.

While it would seem that Hunt would likely see a significant drop in carries this season with the weapons in the passing game, I don’t see that being the case. Given the firepower in the passing game that Mahomes has at his disposal, it will not only allow Hunt more receiving opportunities, but it will keep defenses from stacking the box to focus on Hunt.
