Tight Ends

Keep: Travis Kelce, Demetrius Harris, Jace Amaro

Cut: Alex Ellis, Tim Wright

Possible practice squad: Blake Mack

The Chiefs have been known for having a robust tight end talent. Travis Kelce continues to ensure that he is arguably the best tight end in the league between him and Rob Gronkowski. His ability to be one of the most dangerous weapons at the position while also a sure run blocker makes him an elite talent that cannot be covered.

For some reason that is beyond me, Kansas City seems to love Demetrius Harris. I’ve called him the Dwayne Bowe of tight ends the last couple of years as he will make a fantastic catch in tight and contested coverage but then drop a wide open pass. He’s not a sure lock for the final roster at this point, but given the group he’s competing with and the love the Chiefs seem to have for him, I see him making this roster and continue to be Kelce’s number two.

The third spot is up in the air for anyone to grab at this point. I want to place Blake Mack there given his flashes in training camp, but I see him more as a practice squad stash for the upcoming season. The Chiefs have been trying to transition Mack into a wide receiver, but with all the talent at receiver, he will likely remain on the depth chart as a tight end.

I chose Jace Amaro because he is not only a guy that can get open and catch a pass, but he is a steady run blocker as well. Reid wants his tight ends beyond the number one to play more of a run blocking role in heavy sets. Especially from the third tight end spot. Another reason why I don’t see Mack making the final cut considering his small size for the tight end position.

Alex Ellis was a name that was intriguing to me as he is another Texas Tech native who could bond with Mahomes during his early seasons. However, I don’t see him being a better run blocker than Amaro at this point which pushes him out of contention in my opinion.
