Kansas City Chiefs: Concerns and Highlights of First Preseason Game
The Chiefs will clearly have tough decisions at running back
Kansas City brought in a number of talent at the running back position this offseason. In hopes to avoid last year’s failures at the third running back spot, Brett Veach signed three more running backs to add to the roster and fight for the final spots.
With Spencer Ware healthy and restructuring his contract with the Chiefs, he and Hunt are the number one and two backs. If it were up to me, the Chiefs would be holding onto four running backs this season with the talent that they have and insurance for injuries that could happen.
Last season we saw Hunt get knicked up and slow down as the season progressed at times. We saw Ware get knocked out before the season even started. Why not keep four when you have such a deep talent pool at the position?
Damien Williams ran with the second string offense and looked phenomenal. He’s already had a great camp showing off with flashes, but he looked like a dominant force against the Houston second-string defense. Bouncing off of tacklers with a vicious spin move and at times stiff arming defenders to the ground.
Damien has a real shot at making the third running back position. If I were Charcandrick West, I would be looking for where I want to play outside of Kansas City. Damien showed his blocking and catching out of the backfield abilities last night which is what the team is looking for in a third down back. He also runs a lot better than West which will give him some edge.
Darrel Williams looked promising in the second half as well. If I’m Kansas City, I will keep these two running backs behind the starting two. The Chiefs could technically place Darrel on the practice squad this season, but there’s no chance that he wouldn’t be picked up by another team from what we’ve seen so far.
Kansas City is going to have a tough time when they have to make the 53 man roster cuts at the end of preseason. Regardless, it seems that the Chiefs have a very talented backfield that will see very little dropoffs from each player.
