Running Backs Order

The running backs group is stacked with talent this preseason as Brett Veach wanted to make sure he didn’t end up in the same position as the team was last preseason. When Spencer Ware went down with a season-ending injury, the team had little options behind him. Outside of Kareem Hunt and Charcandrick West, the third running back spot was a revolving door the entire 2017 season.

Veach has brought in some talent to ensure the Chiefs are covered at this position in 2018. Bringing in veterans like Damien Williams and Kerwynn Williams along with UDFA rookie Derrell Williams, there is plenty of competition at the running back position.

The top two spots are likely a lock with Kareem Hunt as the primary starter and Spencer Ware as his backup. Ware solidified his spot on the roster by renegotiating his contract to incentive-based recently making him a cheaper option with no risk.

Charcandrick West is on the outside looking in at this point as he has been utilized primarily as a blocking back the last two seasons. Without much production running the ball and his contract, West could find himself looking for a new job soon. To make things worse for West, he suffered a concussion during camp which has kept him off the field and out of the competition at a crucial time.

While I was high on Darrell Williams coming into training camp, he could be without a spot on the roster. Damien Williams has been impressive during training camp showing off flashes of abilities. The competition will be fun to watch this preseason as all the Williams running backs will be fighting to secure a spot on the roster.

Hunt and Ware will likely be limited during the first preseason game as both are still being cautious with returning from injuries. Look for who starts out of the four running backs looking to battle for that third spot. Who will get the most playing time with earlier groups in the game?
